Akagera: Rwanda's Comeback Story
Akagera National Park in eastern Rwanda is one of Africa's great conservation recovery stories. Heavily poached and degraded in the 1990s, the park has been transformed through a partnership between the Rwanda Development Board and African Parks. Lions were reintroduced in 2015. Black rhino were reintroduced in 2017 and 2019. Today Akagera is a functioning Big Five ecosystem.
The park covers 1,122 sq km of savanna, woodland, lakes and wetlands along the Tanzania border. It is undervisited compared to its East African counterparts — which means more space and more genuine wilderness feeling.
Wildlife
- Elephant — large herds throughout the park
- Lion — reintroduced 2015, breeding population established
- Black rhino — reintroduced 2017 and 2019, monitored population
- Buffalo — large herds
- Hippo and Nile crocodile — in the lakes (excellent boat safari)
- Leopard, hyena, topi, zebra, giraffe
- Over 500 bird species — one of Africa's great birding parks
Boat Safari on Lake Ihema
One of Akagera's best experiences is a boat safari on Lake Ihema — a vast lake dotted with hippo pods and crocodile banks, with papyrus-fringed shores. Bird diversity is outstanding. The boat safaris run morning and afternoon and cost approximately $35–$50 per person.
Park Fees
Akagera's fees are set by African Parks/RDB. Budget approximately $50–$60 per person per day for park entry. Included in all reputable safari package quotes.
Yes — many travellers do exactly this. Volcanoes NP is in the northwest and Akagera is in the east, so a Rwanda circuit covers both. A 5–6 day Rwanda trip can include 1–2 gorilla treks at Volcanoes, a night in Kigali, and 2 days in Akagera. This gives Rwanda's two very different safari experiences.
Safari Costs at Akagera
Park entry fee: approximately $50–$60 per person per day. Game drive vehicle hire (if you do not have your own): $100–$150 per day. Boat safari on Lake Ihema: approximately $35–$50 per person. Most visitors book through a lodge package that includes all activities — standalone day visits from Kigali are possible but a 2-night stay is recommended to cover the park's key areas properly.
Best Lodges at Akagera
- Mid-range ($200–$400/night): Ruzizi Tented Lodge — tented camp inside the park on Lake Ihema. The most immersive Akagera experience. Book early — only 8 tents.
- Luxury ($400–$700+/night): Akagera Game Lodge — the park's main lodge, recently refurbished, good views over the savanna. Full board available.
Combining Akagera with Volcanoes NP
A complete Rwanda circuit: fly into Kigali → Akagera (2 nights, eastern Rwanda, game drives and boat safari) → Kigali overnight → Volcanoes NP (2–3 nights, gorilla trekking) → fly home. This 6–7 day itinerary covers Rwanda's two most distinct safari experiences and is the standard recommendation for first-time Rwanda visitors with sufficient time and budget.
Yes if you have 2 extra days. Akagera provides a completely different experience from Volcanoes NP — open savanna game drives, boat safaris, Big Five wildlife — that makes Rwanda feel like a full safari destination rather than solely a gorilla destination. The two parks together give Rwanda a breadth that surprises most visitors who come expecting only a gorilla trek. If budget or time is very tight, Volcanoes NP is the priority. With flexibility, do both.
