The Honest Answer First

Both are excellent. You cannot make a bad choice. The question is which fits your priorities better — and most of the differences come down to access, park size, and private conservancy options rather than wildlife quality.

Choose Kenya if...

  • You want the famous Mara River crossing and will be there July–October
  • You want a private conservancy experience with night drives and walking
  • You are routing through Nairobi (quicker access to parks)
  • This is your first Africa trip and want the most famous name

Choose Tanzania if...

  • You want more space and fewer vehicles at sightings
  • The Ngorongoro Crater is on your list
  • You plan to add Zanzibar (better beach option than Kenya coast)
  • You want year-round calving season in January–February
The best option: Do both

A combined Kenya-Tanzania safari is genuinely the best East Africa experience. Start in Tanzania (Serengeti, Ngorongoro, Tarangire), cross to the Masai Mara, then fly to Zanzibar. A 10–14 day trip covers all of this comfortably.

They are the same ecosystem for the Migration. Tanzania has larger, less crowded parks which typically means better quality sightings. Kenya has excellent year-round wildlife in the Mara and Amboseli. Neither country is "better" — they are different experiences.
