The Masai Mara

The Masai Mara National Reserve in southwestern Kenya is the northern extension of the Serengeti ecosystem. During July–October, the Great Wildebeest Migration crosses from Tanzania into the Mara, creating the famous river crossing scenes that define safari photography worldwide.

Beyond the Migration, the Mara has one of Africa's highest lion densities, excellent leopard and cheetah sightings, and large herds of elephant and buffalo year-round.

The Mara River Crossing

The iconic river crossings happen when vast herds of wildebeest reach the Mara River and must cross to reach fresh grass. Crocodiles wait. Hundreds or thousands of animals plunge in simultaneously in scenes of chaos and survival.

Crossing timing is unpredictable — herds can wait days at the bank before crossing. The best strategy is to stay 3+ nights in the northern Mara / Mara Triangle area during August–September to maximise your chances.

Masai Mara reserve fees — two-season pricing (2025/2026)

Non-resident adults: $100/day (January–June) and $200/day (July–December). Children 9–17: $50/day year-round. Under 8: free. Ticket validity is 12 hours (6am–6pm). Included in all reputable operator quotes — confirm when booking. Budget fees for peak season (Jul–Dec) carefully: a couple entering the Mara daily during August spends $400/day in reserve fees alone before accommodation.

Best Camps by Budget

  • Budget: Camps outside reserve boundary (Narok area), shared vehicles, $150–$300/night
  • Mid-range: Inside reserve or Olare Motorogi Conservancy, $300–$600/night
  • Luxury: Private conservancies (Naboisho, Olare, Mara North), $600–$1,500+/night. Night drives and walking safaris permitted.
Private conservancies vs national reserve

The Masai Mara is surrounded by private conservancies that offer significant advantages: far fewer vehicles, night drives, guided walks, and off-road driving. They cost more but deliver a dramatically better experience. If your budget allows, book a conservancy camp.

July–October for the Migration and river crossings. August–September are the peak months for crossing activity. Year-round the Mara has excellent resident wildlife including the Big Five. January–February is good, cheaper, and has excellent predator activity.

By road, 5–6 hours. By scheduled light aircraft from Wilson Airport (Nairobi), approximately 45 minutes. Most visitors fly in; the road is rough for much of the journey and the time saving is significant.
