About Nyerere National Park
Nyerere National Park — formerly known as the Selous Game Reserve — is the largest protected area in Africa by total area, covering approximately 54,600 sq km. To put this in perspective: it is larger than Switzerland. The northern section, designated as Nyerere National Park in 2019, is the area open to photographic tourism.
Nyerere is Tanzania's southern circuit flagship and one of the most undervisited major parks in Africa. While the Serengeti receives hundreds of thousands of visitors per year, Nyerere sees a fraction of that — which means space, solitude and wildlife encounters without vehicle crowds.
Cheaper than Serengeti or Ngorongoro. The southern circuit generally costs less than the northern circuit at equivalent quality levels.
Why Nyerere is Different
Three experiences available at Nyerere that are impossible or restricted in Tanzania's northern parks:
- Boat safari on the Rufiji River: Navigate Africa's largest river by boat through hippo pods and crocodile banks. Exceptional birding. Unlike anything available in Serengeti or Ngorongoro.
- Walking safari: Walk with an armed guide through genuine wilderness. Walking safaris are not permitted in most northern Tanzania parks. Nyerere offers them, and they are transformative — you read tracks, smell the bush, and experience scale that a vehicle cannot provide.
- Wild dog sightings: Nyerere has one of Africa's largest wild dog populations. These endangered animals are rarely seen in northern Tanzania. Sightings are not guaranteed but are more likely here than almost anywhere else in East Africa.
Wildlife
- African wild dog — one of the best places in Africa
- Elephant — massive herds
- Lion, leopard, cheetah, hyena
- Hippo — thousands along the Rufiji River
- Nile crocodile — enormous and abundant
- Buffalo herds of hundreds
- Over 440 bird species
How to Get There
By air: Charter flights from Dar es Salaam take 45 minutes to Selous airstrip. Most fly-in southern circuit safaris use this route. By road/train: TAZARA railway from Dar es Salaam reaches Fuga station near the reserve — a remarkable but slow journey.
Southern Circuit vs Northern Circuit
| Factor | Northern Circuit | Southern Circuit |
|---|---|---|
| Famous parks | Serengeti, Ngorongoro | Nyerere, Ruaha |
| Crowds | Higher | Very low |
| Accessibility | Easy from Arusha | Fly-in recommended |
| Walking safaris | Restricted | Available |
| Boat safari | Not available | Excellent |
| Wild dogs | Rare | Good chance |
| Cost | Similar | Slightly lower |
Yes, but it requires flying between them — there is no practical road connection. A 10–14 day Tanzania trip can cover northern circuit (Serengeti, Ngorongoro) and fly to Nyerere for the southern circuit. This is the best of both Tanzania ecosystems and the combination is highly recommended for repeat visitors or those with sufficient time.
