The Two Circuits
Tanzania is large enough to have two entirely distinct safari ecosystems — the iconic Northern Circuit centred on Arusha, and the vast, uncrowded Southern Circuit accessed via Dar es Salaam. Most first-time visitors choose the Northern Circuit. Most repeat visitors want the Southern Circuit.
| Factor | Northern Circuit | Southern Circuit |
|---|---|---|
| Main parks | Serengeti, Ngorongoro, Tarangire, Manyara | Nyerere (Selous), Ruaha, Mikumi |
| Famous for | Great Migration, Big Five, Crater | Wild dogs, boat safari, walking safari |
| Crowds | Higher — especially Jul–Oct | Very low — true wilderness |
| Access hub | Arusha / Kilimanjaro (JRO) | Dar es Salaam (DAR) |
| Road access | Good from Arusha | Fly-in recommended |
| Walking safaris | Not in national parks | Available |
| Boat safari | Not available | Rufiji River (Nyerere) |
| Wild dog sightings | Rare | Good chance |
| Ngorongoro Crater | Yes | Not available |
| Cost level | Standard | Slightly lower |
Choose Northern Circuit if...
- This is your first Tanzania safari — the Northern Circuit is where the reputation comes from
- The Great Migration is a primary goal (Jul–Oct)
- You want the Ngorongoro Crater — unique to the north
- You prefer road-based safaris and want maximum accessibility
- You are adding Zanzibar and want the simplest logistics
Choose Southern Circuit if...
- You have visited northern Tanzania before and want something different
- Walking safaris and boat safaris appeal to you
- Wild dogs are on your list
- You want genuine wilderness with no other vehicles at sightings
- You are happy with fly-in logistics and understand they cost more
Fly into Kilimanjaro, do the Northern Circuit (4–5 days), fly to Dar es Salaam, do Nyerere or Ruaha (3–4 days), end in Zanzibar (3 nights). This is the definitive Tanzania experience and covers ecosystems that cannot be replicated anywhere else.
Not necessarily. Park fees in the south are slightly lower. Accommodation is competitive. The main cost driver is the fly-in transfer — road access to Nyerere from Dar es Salaam takes 4–5 hours and many operators recommend flying for a 45-minute charter flight instead. If you factor in the charter, overall costs are similar to northern circuit mid-range.
